Museums and Exhibits Grafton is a living and working rural Vermont town, but it also has a history and sense of cultural pride that it likes to display. Down Townshend Road is one of the most exquisite natural history museums you wíll ever see, in the Nature Museum. It's great for all ages and especially delightful for children. Across the road, behind the Windham Foundation offices, a sheep exhibit explains the importance of the sheep industry to Grafton. Oh, don't forget to go into the adjoining barn to pet the lambs. Across from the Grafton Village Store on Main Street is the Grafton Historical Society. It can give you a glimpse of Grafton life when the Civil War was big news. The Village Store itself has a display reminding us of when it was the old F. A. Palmer Cash Store. It will show you how far shopping has come or not come. Perk up your ears and you might hear the strains of the Grafton Cornet Band, the oldest continuous town band in the country, practice on the second floor of the Old Firehouse. Likewise, the sound of metal striking the anvil will draw you to the Old Blacksmith Shop on School Street for a wonderful demonstration of a time honored trade. The Blacksmith Shop is open seasonally Wed - Sun from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend. Around the corner from the Blacksmith Shop on Pleasant Street is the Vermont Museum of Mining and Minerals (802-875-3562) to experience a beautiful collection of Vermont and other worldy minerals. |
