Scholarship Program

Windham Foundation founder Dean Mathey was passionate about education. His commitment lives on through the Scholarship Program which, in over 40 years, has provided financial assistance to more than 6,700 Windham County students.

In partnership with the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation, the Foundation annually selects qualified Windham County students from a pool of more than 350 applications. The average amount of an award for 2010 will be $1,000 per student and may be renewable. All awards are paid directly to the institution of study and not to the individual student. While most students enroll in traditional college level institutions, the Foundation occasionally provides support for individuals who attend a trade school with a certificate program.

If you feel you qualify to be considered for a scholarship, you may file a Scholarship Application. There there are other requirements that need to be followed to complete the process, including transcript requests and the completion of financial aid forms. See Scholarship Instructions below for additional information and filing deadlines.

Windham Foundation Scholarships are limited to Windham County residents studying at the undergraduate level. The maximum number of scholarships a student may receive is four. The Scholarship Committee bases its awards on financial need.

All applicants must apply to the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC) for a Vermont Grant and file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1, 2010.  To be considered for a Windham Foundation Scholarship, you must do all of the following:

  1. The Windham Foundation Scholarship application must be completed and mailed to the Windham Foundation, P.O. Box 70, Grafton, VT 05146 by March 1, 2010. A transcript must also be received. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable. (See instruction item #4 for specific requirements.) You will be notified by mail when your application and transcript have been received by the Windham Foundation.
  2. The Vermont Grant Application must be completed and mailed to VSAC by March 1, 2010. Their address is Vermont Student Assistance Corporation, P.O. Box 2000, Winooski, Vermont 05404-2601 Attention: Grant Program.
  3. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed and mailed by March 1, 2010. VSAC determines your financial need through an analysis of the information provided on the FAFSA and the Vermont Grant Application.
  4. Transcripts must be sent to the Windham Foundation by March 1, 2010.

For 2010 high school graduates (who will be entering as Freshmen), a transcript of the first seven semesters of high school grades must accompany the application. Return your completed application to your high school guidance department to be forwarded, along with your transcript, to the Windham Foundation. For students currently attending college, a transcript of all college grades, through the Fall 2009 semester must be received. For students who are not currently enrolled in college, but who have some previous undergraduate credits, a transcript(s) of all college grades must be received. For students not graduating from high school in 2010, who do not have any college experience, a complete transcript of high school grades must be received.

If your transcript does not accompany your application, please indicate from whom and when we can expect it. The transcript deadline is also March 1, 2010.

You must follow the deadlines and procedures listed above even if you are delaying your entry into college until the Spring 2011 semester. The Windham Foundation Scholarship Committee will notify you of their award decision early in the summer of 2010.

some helpful hints

  1. If there is more than one student from a family applying, each must complete the financial aid and application process.
  2. Act quickly on any and all requests for additional information that might be asked of you. Photocopy all documents.
  3. If, within a reasonable period of time, you do not hear that your information has been received or processed, start to make follow-up calls. Keep a record of when you wrote or called and to whom you spoke.
  4. Because the Windham Foundation Scholarship Committee makes its awards only once per year, it is best to apply even if you are undecided as to which school or college you are going to attend or the course of study you are going to pursue.
  5. Be sure that the mailing address you use is a permanent one at which your mail can be processed even if you are away at school or not personally available.
  6. Scholarship awards could vary in amounts and change from student to student each year.
