The Rockingham Free Public Library in Bellows Falls, VT, is working to preserve a unique collection of photographic negatives and make them more accessibly to the public with the help of a grant from the Windham Foundation.

The library, founded in 1799, has a collection of 1,459 Glass Plate Negatives. The project includes the creation of positive images from the negatives and making them available in the library and on the library’s website. The $5,000 grant also aids the library’s efforts to preserve the original negatives.

The photographs depict a variety of scenes within the town of Rockingham and surrounding towns from when photography was still a new technology. The project is designed to provide access to the photo images to school groups and professional researchers, as well as the general public.
